MEHTARLAM, Afghanistan, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- An Afghan civilian was killed and three others injured when a bomb went off in Laghman province with Mehtarlam as its capital, 90 km east of capital city of Kabul, police said on Tuesday.

"A roadside bomb blasted Monday night in Baba Dashti area in vicinity of provincial capital Mehtarlam, leaving a person walking by dead and injuring three others," deputy to provincial police chief Daud Barakzai told Xinhua.

He said the victims were local Kuchi or nomad natives and the injured were shifted to a local hospital by police shortly after the blast occurred.

In a separate incident, three women were killed and two others including a child wounded when a mortar shell hit a house in Nalgham village of Zhari district in country's southern Kandahar province, a police official in the district, Abdul Rasheed told Xinhua.

The police official said the incident happened when one of several mortals, reportedly fired by NATO-led coalition forces to target the insurgents, had accidentally hit a civilian house on Sunday morning.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since the militant group announced to launch spring offensive from May 1 against Afghan and NATO-led troops stationed in Afghanistan.

A total of 1,462 Afghan civilians were killed in the first half of 2011, a 15 percent rise over the same period of 2010, according to the United Nations mid-year report released in Kabul on July.
