Military forces halt minor disturbance at polling station in Egypt

21:34, November 28, 2011

CAIRO, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian military forces halted a minor disturbance at a polling station in the southern Assuit province on Monday as the country braced for the first stage of its People's Assembly elections, a local source said.

The disturbance was started by some voters who found that the names of two candidates they supported were expelled from the electoral list, the local source said.

The two candidates were disqualified because they did not finish their military services, the source said.

Egypt's state TV reported earlier that the military forces foiled a shooting attempt at the polling station workers.

The voting started at 8:00 a.m. (0600 GMT) in Cairo, Alexandria, Fayoum, Port Said, Damietta, Kafr El-Sheikh, Assiut, Luxor and the Red Sea, nine out of Egypt's 27 governorates.
