12 anti-gov't insurgents lay down arms in western Afghan town

HERAT, Afghanistan, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- A dozen of anti- government armed insurgents laid down their arms and joined the government-initiated peace process in Herat province, 640 km west of Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday, a statement of the National Directorate for Security (NDS) said.

"Twelve armed insurgents under Mullah Abdul Salam Dilawar handed over their weapons to security authorities in Adraskan district today and joined the peace process," the statement added.

With the joining of the armed group to peace process, security would be further strengthened in Adraskan and adjoining areas, the statement further said.

Taliban militants fighting the Afghan government and active in Adraskan district have yet to make comment.
