Occupy LA encampment ordered to be shutdown, no tactics revealed

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has ordered the shutdown of the Occupy Los Angeles encampment on City Hall grounds by 12:01 a.m. PST (1601 GMT) Monday, but no tactics have been revealed on how the police would evict the protesters.

According to a statement released Friday, the order was issued because officials could no longer maintain the public safety of a long-term encampment.

Villaraigosa said the city's General Services Police Department, which enforces law in city parks, will walk through the encampment handing out bilingual fliers and give verbal notice that the park will be closed.

"Occupy LA has brought needed attention to the growing disparities in our country and I look forward to its ongoing efforts to build an economy that works for everyone," Villaraigosa said in his statement.

"As we continue to respect the exercise of everyone's First Amendment rights in our civic center and throughout Los Angeles, City Hall Park is temporarily closing out of concern for the public safety implications of a long-term encampment," the statement says.

Several hundred protesters have occupied the lawn surrounding Los Angeles City Hall since Oct. 1. It now has a library, a meditation tent and more than a dozen committees responsible for planning civil disobedience actions, disseminating news to the media and running nightly general assembly meetings.
