According to a report by the Kyodo News, the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force carried out an island defense drill in an exercise field of the Oita Prefecture of the Kyushu on Nov. 17. The drill was an open drill for media, and tanks from the Hokkaido participated in it for the first time.

On the same day, the Japan Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces also carried out a joint drill in the southwestern part of the Kyushu and in the Okinawa.

Some analysts believe that the drills are mainly aimed at coping with the strengthening military forces of China, and were carried out based on the consideration of strengthening the defense in the southwestern part of Japan and building up a mobile defense force prescribed by the National Defense Program Outline.

The joint drill of ground, maritime and air forces, in which 35,000 officers and soldiers participated, was also carried out focusing on island defense. In the drill, not only ground-to-ship missiles were deployed in the Amami Great Island of the Kagoshima Prefecture, but also air curtain landing crafts were used. The drill showed vivid actual combat effects.
