Two explosions hit southern Lebanese city

BEIRUT, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Two explosions rocked Lebanon's southern port city of Tyre Wednesday morning, with no casualties reported but some material damage, a security source told Xinhua.

The source said the explosions targeted a liquor store and a hotel in the coastal city, which is a main attraction to the peace keepers operating as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Unlike other cities and towns in conservative south Lebanon, alcohol is sold openly in Tyre, which houses several nightclubs and pubs.

The UNIFIL troops were the target over the summer of two separate roadside bombs that registered several injuries among the Italian and French troops.

Earlier this week, the UN Interim Special Coordinator for Lebanon Robert Watkins discussed the safety of peacekeepers in Lebanon with the country's Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

UNIFIL has been beefed up to a 13,000-member peacekeeping force in the aftermath of the conflicts between Israel and Lebanon in the summer of 2006. The force's tasks include overseeing the implementation of UN Resolution 1701, which put an end to the 34- day conflicts, and monitoring the cease-fire between Lebanon and Israel.
