Israel army chief calls for "aggressive" Gaza incursion

14:05, November 16, 2011

JERUSALEM, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz on Tuesday said that the army would have to "aggressively" enter the Gaza Strip "for a limited period of time," in order to put a stop to a rise in attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers.

Speaking at a briefing to the Foreign Affairs and Defense subcommittee, Gantz said that "As a result of the increase in hostilities in the south, and in light of the attacks on residents and interruptions in their daily life, the IDF will have to mount a significant, aggressive operation," according to Israel Radio.

Although the army had largely succeeded in quelling recent rocket barrages into Israel, Gantz said that due to the continuing Grad and Kassam attacks, "Israel must take the initiative, and not be dragged into events."

Gantz added that the operation would have to be "as brief and intensive as possible," and that it would "have to be based on good intelligence and fast deployment, which required high readiness and the quality personnel within the IDF."
