S. Korea seeks trilateral talks with Japan, U.S. over DPRK nuclear program

SEOUL, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- South Korea is seeking to hold talks with the United States and Japan over the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s nuclear program on the sidelines of an 18-nation summit next week, local media reported Wednesday.

The potential meeting, if held on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit in Bali, Indonesia, would bring together South Korea' s top nuclear envoy Lim Sung-nam, his Japanese counterpart Sugiyama Shinsuke and U.S. Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell, according to Yonhap News Agency.

The plan for the trilateral talks comes after the DPRK and the U.S. held two rounds of talks over resuming six-nation negotiations aimed at dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear program in exchange for aid.

South Korea also held rare denuclearization talks with its northern neighbor, though not much progress has been reported.

The negotiations, stalled since December 2008, also involve China and Russia. The DPRK declared the talks "dead" in 2009, but recently expressed its wish to return to the negotiating table.

South Korea demands the DPRK abandon its uranium enrichment program and allow inspectors to verify the disarmament process.
