Afghan President leaves for Maldives to attend SAARC summit

KABUL, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday left for Maldives to attend the 17th the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit, a statement released by his office said.

In the two-day summit due to open on Thursday, the Afghan president will deliver a speech on enhancing cooperation in economic, cultural, political and security sectors with the other member states, the statement said.

A high-ranking delegation, including some ministers, is accompanying the Afghan president during the tour to Maldives.

Established in 1985, the SAARC groups India, Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Afghanistan joined the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in 2007.
