Obama compares GOP debates to "Survivor"

08:56, October 26, 2011

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday compared the Republican debates to the popular TV game show "Survivor," saying he will only start to pay attention to the race until the opposing party narrow the field to one or two candidates.

Obama made the remarks in an appearance on NBC's "Tonight Show" with host Jay Leno. When asked if he has been watching the GOP debates, the president replied he is "going to wait until everybody is voted off the island" to laughter and applause from the audience.

"Once they narrow it down to one or two, I'll start paying attention," Obama told Leno. He also blasted GOP for putting the election ahead of the country.

"I think the things that folks across the country are most fed up with ... is putting party ahead of country or putting the next election ahead of the next generation."

Congressional Republican leaders have explicitly said their biggest mission before next year's presidential election is to make sure Obama become a one-term president.

Obama taped the appearance Tuesday morning in Los Angeles, and NBC made some clips of the show, to be aired Tuesday night, available in the afternoon. The president is in a three-day swing to promote his jobs agenda and hold campaign events in the West.
