Libyan conflict brings 2013 African Nations Cup to South Africa

10:26, September 28, 2011

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan conflict cost the chance of hosting the 2013 Africa Naitons Cup, which will be moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, the South African Press Association (SAPA) reported on Tuesday.

SAPA said that South Africa will replace Libya as host of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. An official statement confirming the switch is expected before Sept. 30.

Following a Confederation of African Football (CAF) meeting in Cairo, where the rights for the 2013 event were discussed, SAPA quoted an unnamed senior South African Football Association official confirming that South Africa has been given the rights to host the tournament.

South Africa were due to host the tournament in 2017 but now they will swap events with Libya, who will stage the 2017 version.
