KABUL, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- More than 1,000 people took to Afghan capital Kabul streets on Tuesday and called on United Nations to launch a thorough investigation into the assassination of former president and chief peace negotiator with Taliban Burhanudin Rabbani.

The protestors carrying the banners and placards inscribed with slogans "Death to Taliban","Death to terrorists", "We want UN to investigate professor Rabbani's murder"dispersed peacefully after reading out a resolution.

The resolution asked UN to appoint an investigation team to probe Rubbani's killing. called on government to halt peace talks with Taliban and bring to justice those responsible for committing the murder.

Rabbani, 71, who had been appointed as head of the government- backed High Council for Peace in October 2010 to negotiate with Taliban and other armed opposition groups, was killed in a suicide bomb attack at his Kabul residence on September 20.

Although a Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid had claimed responsibility for the killing, the militant group later denied involvement in the attack.
