KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Unknown armed men gunned down a local police commander and his son in Kunduz province, 250 km north of capital city Kabul, Saturday night, police said Sunday.

"Unidentified armed men opened fire on Abdul Khaliq, the commander of local police in Kunduz city, the capital of Kunduz province, last night, killing him along with his son," police spokesman in Kunduz city Sayed Sarwar Hussaini told Xinhua.

The incident took place when Khaliq was going to his home along with his son, he added.

Local police is a community police established by government to defend their villages against possible Taliban attacks.

Meantime, Zabihullah Mujahid, who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit in talks with media via telephone from undisclosed location, claimed responsibility, saying Taliban fighters punished commander Khaliq for his support to government.
