Saudi king says women allowed to contest in next municipal elections

CAIRO, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Saudi King Abdullah announced Sunday that women would be allowed to vote and run in the next municipal elections and given the rights to join the Shura Council, the Dubai-based Al Arabiya TV reported.

In his speech addressing the advisory Shura Council, the king announced the kingdom decided to allow women to become members of the Shura Council begins with its next term, saying the kingdom refuse to marginalise females in all walks of the society.

Women in Saudi Arabia which complies with a strict version the Sunni Islam, have been forbidden from travelling, receiving operations, or driving without the content of a man relative, and they are not allowed to drive. Rights activists have long been fighting to gain women more rights.
