MANILA, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen members of an armed group allegedly linked to the Abu Sayyaf and two soldiers were killed and six other soldiers were wounded following an attack on a marine detachment in Talipao town of the southern province of Sulu shortly before dawn Sunday, the military said.

Col. Romeo Tanalgo, commander of the marine forces in the province, said about 100 militants swooped down at the detachment of the 30th Marine Company on Kabungcol village around 4:30 a.m., sparking a two-hour firefight.

"We were able to repulse the attack," said Tanalgo, adding soldiers scoured the vicinity of the encounter site after the clash and have recovered 13 enemy bodies and seven firearms. The clash also left two marine soldiers dead and six others wounded.

Tanalgo said the government soldiers were securing a school which was being constructed by Army engineers.

"These people are against development, that's why the mayor is so mad (with the attack)," said Tanalgo.

Tanalgo said they were still ascertaining the group affiliation of the suspects, armed with rifles, though he said rogue Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) leader Habier Malik is known to operate in the area.

But Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Mindanao Command spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang named a group called Awliyah as behind the attack. Cabangbang said the group has ties with the Abu Sayyaf and the MNLF in the area.
