Strong typhoon likely to land on Japan's Honshu

TOKYO, Sept.21 (Xinhua) -- A strong typhoon is likely to land on Japan's largest island of Honshu and makes its way across on Wednesday, with Japan Meteorological Agency calling for "the greatest possible vigilance."

As of 10 a.m., Typhoon Roke, bringing strong winds and heavy rain, was located some 40 kilometers off the southernmost tip of the Kii Peninsula, and heading northeast toward the Tokai region in central Japan at a speed of 35 kilometers per hour, packing winds of up to 216 kph.

The number of casualties has hit five in Aichi, Ehime, Saga and Nagasaki prefectures, with the body of a man found in a river in Nagoya early Wednesday morning.

Over 1 million people were instructed to evacuate in central Japan's Nagoya city, according to the local Kyodo News.

More than 200 domestic flights were canceled and the Yamagata Shinkansen bullet train services between Shinjo and Fukushima stations was suspended, according to airlines and East Japan Railway Co.
