Efforts continue to curtail oil leaks from abandoned well in Louisianna

HOUSTON, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Coast Guard officers are continuing their efforts to curtail oil leaks from an abandoned oil well in a coastal basin in southeastern Louisianna since the leaks were reported on Sept.11.

A contingent of 59 personnel have used about four kilometers of boom -- a kind of materials used for oil spill containment -- in catching the oil, with the help of other equipment, and had plugged one leak in the well head and worked to ensure the second leak and the third, which was discovered Wednesday, have stopped oil discharging, local media quoted sources from the U.S. Coast Guard as saying on Monday.

More than 60 barrels of oil have been recovered from the site of the oil spills in the abandoned well, which is said to be owned by Houston-based Cedyco Corp.

State officials said the oil spills didn't adversely affected the quality of seafood.

Investigation over the cause of the spills is underway.

In April last year, British oil giant BP's Macondo well ruptured after an oil rig exploded and sank off the Louisianna coast, spewing up to 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico for nearly three months in the worst oil spill in the U.S. history.
