ISLAMABAD, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and 34 others injured when a blast hit a CD shop at a market area in Pakistan's northwest city of Peshawar Monday night, reported local Urdu TV channel Geo.

Five of the injured people were in critical condition, said hospital sources.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari issued a statement strongly condemned the attack that killed innocent civilians.

The blast took place at about 9:00 p.m. local time Monday near a CD shop at a market located on the Nishtarabad road of the city.

The bomb was planted on a motorcycle parked outside the CD shop, local media quoted eyewitnesses as saying. There were an estimated 50 people around the site when the blast went off, said eyewitnesses.

The blast damaged some 20 shops nearby and several shops and vehicles caught fire following the blast.

Fire fighters shortly arrived at the scene. Rescue team have shifted all the injured people to Lady Reading Hospital, the largest government-run hospital in the city.

Police sources said that an estimated ten kilograms of explosives were used in the blast.

No group has claimed the responsibility for the blast yet.

Earlier on Monday morning, a suicide car bomb hit a senior police officer's house in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, killing eight people including six policemen and a mother and a child. Pakistan Taliban have taken the credit for the attack and vowed to launch more attacks on police.
