Kyrgyz Central Elections Commission warns PM over premature canvassing

08:38, September 20, 2011

BISHKEK. Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Kyrgyz Central Elections Commission Monday warned Prime Minister Almazbek Atambayev to stop violating the constitutional law on presidential election, threatening to oust him from the election if he continues with his premature canvassing.

"Presidential candidate Almazbek Atambayev has been given a warning due to his violation of the constitutional law 'On Elections,'" the Commission told Interfax.

"Following the nomination of Atambayev for Kyrgyz president, his media activities has grown a lot. The numerous interviews and statements of candidate Atambayev to the online and printed media contain elements of canvassing," the Commission said.

According to the kyrgyz law, the canvassing period shall start at the end of the registration of candidates on September 25, 2011, and ends 24 hours before the ballot, at 8:00 a.m. on October 29. The presidential election will be held on October 30. "The Central Elections Commission studied the materials posted in the national, foreign online and printed media and television and decided that they contained elements of premature canvassing," the Commission said.

The Commission told Atambayev that it was "impermissible to use the advantages provided by one's position."

"So far, the Central Elections Commission is giving a warning to candidate Atambayev and saying that recurrent violations of the aforesaid requirements may lead to the Central Elections Commission's invalidation of the candidate's registration," the Commission said.
