ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A bomb exploded in the southern Philippine city of Cotabato Wednesday morning but no one was reported hurt or killed in the incident, local police said.

According to Felicisimo Khu, regional police director for Western Mindanao, the minor explosion that occurred about 5:10 a.m. , local time was caused by the blasting cap which failed to trigger the explosion of 81-mm mortar round used as the main charge of the homemade bomb.

The bomb was planted underneath a jeep parked near the gate of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) regional office.

Khu said government troops rushed to the explosion site and saw a torn black bag underneath the jeep. They then removed the bag with a rope and took it to a safer place in the middle of a road island.

The bomb disposal elements spotted an 81mm mortar round with an attached cellphone.

"The bomber might be somewhere in the distance trying to detonate the bomb as the cellphone kept on ringing which delayed our troops from neutralizing the recovered bomb," Khu said. The bomb was defused an hour later.

Wednesday's explosion is believed to be connected to the two bombings which occurred Tuesday within the vicinity of the regional hospital also in Cotabato City.

Khu said the police are still searching for three other bombs believed to have been slipped into Cotabato City on Sept. 3.
