Flood situation still grim in north, east India

14:15, September 13, 2011

NEW DELHI, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- The flood situation in northern and eastern India remained grim with river rising and overflowing despite less rain recently in the monsoon season, reported the Times of India Tuesday.

The dams in the hills have been released recently, leading to a rise in the level of all major rivers in northern India, said the report.

The Ganga was above the danger mark in many parts of Uttar Pradesh, while other major rivers in northern India have also risen.

In Uttar Pradesh, more than 60 houses were washed away by flood waters in six villages, while 200,000 cusecs of water released from dams led to flash floods in over 20 villages in Uttar Pradesh and neighboring Bihar state, said the report.

In the eastern state of Orissa, local government stepped up food relief to people affected by the deluge that has left 16 people dead and thousands of others homeless in the last week.

Airdropping by Indian air force continued for the second day Monday as tens of thousands of people remained marooned in many areas of the state, according to the report.
