BENGHAZI, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Libyan rebels have clinched a crucial deal to enter the besieged town of Bani Walid, a pro-Muammmar Gaddafi stronghold, according to an Al Jazeera television report on Tuesday.

The report said Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) had reached an agreement with local tribal leaders to enter the town on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. local time (1000 GMT), but the information has not yet been confirmed by the NTC.

The latest development followed the rebels' announcement on Monday that talks for a peaceful handover of the city had collapsed.

On Saturday, the NTC demanded that the pro-Gaddafi forces lay down their arms within one week, saying the NTC forces are capable of deploying troops in any city or town and that they would use military means after "the end of this extension."

Bani Walid, along with Sirte on the Mediterranean coast and Sabha deep in the Sahara desert, are Gaddafi's last pockets of support.
