12 people wounded in bomb attack in Iraq

08:56, September 01, 2011

BAGHDAD, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Twelve people were wounded in two bomb attacks in central and eastern Iraq on Wednesday, the police said.

A roadside bomb struck an Iraqi army patrol around midday in Abu Ghraib area, some 20 km west of Baghdad, destroying a military vehicle and wounding five soldiers aboard, a local police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The blast also wounded three people at the scene, the source said.

Insurgent attacks continue in the once volatile Sunni Arab area in west of Baghdad that stretches through Anbar province to Iraq's western borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Earlier, the police reported the wounding of an Iraqi army officer and three of his soldiers in a roadside bomb attack in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala.

In addition, Diyala's police said that the Iraqi security forces captured an al-Qaida cell leader believed to be involved in assassinations and bomb attacks during a raid on an insurgent's safe house in the province.

Diyala province, which stretches from the eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border east of the country, has long been a stronghold for al-Qaida militants and other insurgent groups since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
