5.7-magnitude quake hits New Ireland region, Papua New Guinea

SYDNEY, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted New Ireland region, Papua New Guinea at 10:46:50 GMT on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 49 km, was initially determined to be at 5.97 degrees south latitude and 153.25 degrees east longitude.

The epicenter was 771 km northeast of Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, and 167 km south of Taron, New Ireland, the most northeastern province of Papua New Guinea.
