Chilean leader reaches out to student protestors

SANTIAGO, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chilean President Sebastian Pinera Sunday called for "constructive dialogue" with student protestors who have been waging months-long demonstrations nationwide to press for education reform.

"The dialogue should be with good will and good results to solve the problem," Pinera said in a pubic address.

"After three months of protest, strikes and hunger strikes, we have seen violence flourish. We believe now it is peace time, unity time, the time for dialogue and agreements," he said.

Pinera also said his government "is doing everything necessary to clear the circumstances and take the responsibility for the death" of Manuel Gutierrez, a student shot dead Thursday during a clash between protestors and police.

The Chilean Students Confederation (Confech), the protest organizer, has accepted Pinera's proposal for dialogue, but demanded the removal of Minister of Interior Rodrigo Hinzpeter who they said was responsible for the death of Gutierrez.
