Philippine gov't assists families hit by Typhoon Nanmadol

MANILA, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine government has released assistance to the families affected by Typhoon Nanmadol ( local code Mina), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said Sunday.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), at least eight people have died and six others went missing in the Philippines as a result of Nanmadol.

About 508,912 peso (11,974 U.S. dollar) worth of relief goods has been initially released by the government from the combined resources of the DSWD and concerned local government units to assists 5,851 typhoon-hit families or 29,585 persons in a number of northern Philippine regions since Nanmadol entered the country' s area of responsibility on Aug. 21.

A total of 44 evacuation centers were opened in the affected regions serving 1,637 families with 7,961 persons. The evacuees were given relief packs and hot meals at the evacuation centers managed by social workers of the affected local government units with the assistance of DSWD social workers.

DSWD Secretary Corazon Juliano Soliman has directed all social welfare and development teams to continue to coordinate with their counterparts in the affected local government units to ensure quick provision of augmentation assistance when necessary.
