15:21, August 22, 2011

KINSHASA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The second ordinary congress of the People's Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD, ruling party) on Sunday endorsed Joseph Kabila as its candidate for the November 28 presidential elections.

Joseph Kabila is the incumbent president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).

The congress which was held between from Friday to Sunday enabled PPRD to start preparing for the presidential elections just like the other political parties and to discuss names of possible candidates for the November 2011 legislative elections.

Many of the opposition supporters have been calling for the opposition leaders to choose one candidate through consensus so that he or she can successfully compete with the outgoing president.

President of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) Etienne Tshisekedi wa Mulumba who is in the frontline to become the opposition candidate, has called on his opposition colleagues to come together and nominate a single candidate.

On Aug. 18, the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) opened the registration process for presidential and legislative candidates. This process is expected to end on Sept. 5 at midnight.
