Aftershock rocks Christchurch exactly six months after lethal earthquake

09:05, August 22, 2011

WELLINGTON, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- A 4.2-magnitude aftershock struck near New Zealand's second city of Christchurch early Monday, six months to the day after the devastating 6.3-magnitude Feb. 22 earthquake that left at least 181 people dead.

The quake struck at 8: 38 a.m., and was centered 10 km southeast of the port of Lyttelton at a depth of 10 km.

The government's GNS Science research institute said the quake was "widely felt in Christchurch," and strongly in some areas. The tremor was the fourth over-magnitude-of--4 since Saturday, said a GNS statement. The city has experienced almost 4,000 tremors since the devastating February quake.
