DAVAO CITY, Philippines, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Suspected leftist rebels shot and killed a village official in southern Philippines on Thursday, police on Friday said.

Samuel Dumalagan, councilor of Manila de Bugabos village in Mindanao's Butuan City, was having a drinking spree at a friend' s house nearby Tungao village when attacked around 10:30 a.m., Superintendent Martin Gamba, regional police spokesperson said.

Three of the five alleged New People's Army gunmen barged into the house and forcibly took the victim who was then handcuffed and taken to some 50 meters from the house and shot by pistols.

The 4,000-strong NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been known to target civilians and local officials whom they suspected of helping in the government's anti- insurgency campaign in the countryside.
