Sudan's NCP threatens to end UNAMID mandate

09:55, August 18, 2011

KHARTOUM, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's ruling National Congress Party (NCP) threatened Wednesday to end the mandate of the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) if the UN Security Council insisted on extension of the mission mandate according to new powers.

"The Sudan government may possibly cancel the work of UNAMID or end the agreement from one side if the UN Security Council insisted on implementing its resolution on extension of the mission mandate," the secretary of Political Mobilization of NCP Haj Majid Suwar said at a press conference.

He added that the government would take all possible measures to oppose the UN Security Council's resolution on extension of the mission mandate on basis of new powers.

"The resolution is part of a series of division that tends to divide Sudan and weaken the government," he added, pointing out that the resolution embodied many negative signals contrary to what is going on in the Darfur region.

"The government will make wide contacts in coordination with the African Union during the coming days to oppose the resolution and mobilize the internal public opinion, namely in the three Darfur States."

The UN Security Council has earlier issued a resolution extending the UNAMID mandate with new powers.

The Sudanese government rejects the resolution, saying that it contradicted the provisions of the agreement in accordance with which the mission was established in the region in 2007.
