All 3,000-plus Kunlun jade discs, after being processed and receiving accreditation from the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), were relegated to Shanghai Mint by the government of Qinghai Province on March 3, 2008.
Shanghai Mint will deliver the 2008 Olympic Games Medals to the BOCOG in June.
The jade comes from the Kunlun Mountains in northwest China's Qinghai Province - an area abundant in high-quality jade.
On January 2, the BOCOG officially confirmed that jade would be used to make the Olympic medals for the Beijing 2008 Games. The gold medal will contain white jade; the silver will contain greenish-white jade; and the bronze will glitter with cyan jade.
The special design – gold inlaid with jade – requires two materials for the medals for the first time in Olympic history.
