Roadside hawkers share Olympic glee with torch relay
14:10, July 25, 2008

The world's largest sports gala is destined to be a festal occasion for every athlete, spectator and even roadside hawker in China.

With the Beijing Olympic torch continuing its relay in Zhengzhou, vendors hawking the national flags and T-shirts with the Fuwa mascot print suddenly flooded the capital city of the central Hennan province.

"The national flags have been selling like hot cakes these days," Zhang Chanzhe, a local part-time souvenir vendor said with a big smile.

"I can both earn bucks and feel people's enthusiasm handing them the flags," said the 22-year old university student who found the new way to earn an extra income days before.

Zhang earned an average of 300 yuan (about 44 U.S. dollars ) these days, almost three times what he used to earn as a part-time tutor.

"Actually I am considering about donating all the earnings these days to the earthquake victims in Sichuan to further spread the Olympic glee to more," he said.

The torch started its tour in Zhengzhou on Friday, when hundreds of thousands of locals stood along the roads, waving flags and cheering as the torchbearers passed.

"I bought altogether 4 flags and decorated my car with them," said Liu Lihong, a Zhengzhou native. "The flags externalized my excitement and pride."
