Number of World Expo volunteers to exceed 2 million

The recruitment, selection and training of some 2 million Shanghai World Expo 2010 volunteers will soon come to an end.

The volunteers have been divided into three groups: those who will serve at the World Expo site, those who will staff the service stations in the different parts of Shanghai during the event and the urban civilization volunteers.

More than 72,000 people had applied to be volunteers at the World Expo site by April 6, and nearly 100,000 people had applied to work at the service stations. Successful applicants will be assigned to work at the World Expo site, which covers an area of 52,800 square meters and at more than 1,000 service stations in 18 districts and counties.

The total number of World Expo volunteers is surely to exceed 2 million as the current number of urban civilization volunteers from all walks of life is already nearly that number, according to Ma Chunlei, director of the Expo Volunteer Recruitment Team.

The 200,000 volunteer candidates for the World Expo site and for the service stations have been receiving standard training at 41 training bases since January 22. They will go through an examination and only those who pass can be accepted as registered volunteers.

There are 14 training courses and candidates must learn to understand the questions: "Who am I?" "What do I want to do?” and "How can I do a good job?"
