27 central SOEs to be integrated and reorganized by 2011

By the end of 2010, the number of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) will be reduced to between 80 and 100, according to the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC).

Of the 127 SOEs currently in existence, at least 27 will be integrated and reorganized and the comprehensive strength and core competence of the remaining 100 will be enhanced. In addition, 30 to 50 SOEs will be cultivated into large world-renowned companies that have proprietary intellectual property rights and are internationally competitive.

Some of these enterprises, including Sinopec, Baosteel and China Telecom, have already begun to carry out research into further increasing their international competitiveness.
