Beijing's traffic congestion index has decreased by more than 8 percent since the introduction of a series of anti-congestion measures about three months ago, and the city will continue its efforts to tackle congestion, Liu Xiaoming, director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport, said during an interview with Beijing Public Service Radio on March 28.

Beijing introduced 28 anti-congestion measures at the end of last year, including five new subway lines and a rush-hour ban on vehicles registered outside the capital. Liu said that the city's traffic congestion index decreased by 8 percent to 10 percent in the past three months compared with the same period of last year.

The Jingkai Expressway witnessed the most significant improvement. According to statistics, the current traffic volume on the expressway is 12 percent to 15 percent less than that of the same period of last year, and the road traffic has become 20 percent to 25 percent smoother.

Liu said that Beijing will take further efforts to improve its traffic handling capacity this year by establishing "transportation microcirculation systems" in the city proper and other means. The city plans to spend 4.5 billion yuan on more than 40 "transportation microcirculation" projects in its six main districts, including building three new roads surrounding the South Square of the Beijing West Railway Station and renovating a 4.5-kilometer road in the Dujiakan area.
