Guangzhou became the first Chinese city to be granted the International Sustainable Transport Award 2011 at 8 p.m. local time on Jan. 25.

Other 2011 nominees include Leon, Mexico; Nantes, France; Tehran, Iran and Lima, Peru.

According to the annual conference of the U.S.-based Transportation Research Board, Guangzhou stood out from the rest of the competing cities to clinch the victory this year for its recent transportation achievements — most notably the Zhongshan Ave. Bus Rapid Transit, its public bike system and the Greenway System.

Past winners of this prominent international award include New York, Paris and London. Beijing was nominated in 2009 but did not win.
