Troupers perform a shadow play drama in Xiaoyi City, north China's Shanxi Province, March 12, 2011. Shadow Play in Xiaoyi, a major sect of Chinese shadow plays, has been going downhill since its heyday during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1912). In 2006, China listed the Xiaoyi Shadow Play as the first batch of China's intangible heritage to better protect this art form. Shadow Play or Shadow Puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment using opaque, often articulated figures in front of an illuminated backdrop to create the illusion of moving images.
