The Israel Air Force bombed weapons manufacturing sites in the northern Gaza Strip overnight Tuesday in response to a rocket attack launched by Gazan militants.

The pilots confirmed direct hits on two sites, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesperson's Unit said Wednesday in a statement.

The attack came shortly after two rockets were fired from Gaza into the western Negev. They exploded in open areas, causing damage to civilian structures.

The statement said the IDF will not allow Israel's southern communities to "continue living under constant threat," adding that it holds militant group Hamas responsible for "any terrorist activity" emanating from the Palestinian enclave.

In a separate incident, the Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian Wednesday morning near the West Bank city of Nablus.

Palestinian medical officials identified the man as 22-year-old engineering student Ibrahim Sarhan.

He was shot during an arrest operation in the al-Fari'a refugee camp, the Ha'aretz daily reported.

A confrontation broke out in the camp when the Israeli troops entered it to arrest suspects. The soldiers opened fire after an explosive charge was hurled at them, fatally wounding Sarhan.

The IDF said the troops fired shots at his lower body when he attempted to escape after being arrested. A Red Crescent ambulance evacuated him to a local hospital but he died prior to arrival.
