Beijing municipal government launched a campaign on Dec. 13 to solicit opinions and suggestions from the general public on the newly-released measures intended to ease traffic congestion.

The measures address the increasingly heavy traffic from six aspects: improvement on early planning, redistribution of function and population in urban areas, construction of urban road and infrastructure, more attention on public transport, improvements to bicycle and pedestrian traffic systems as well as park-and-rides, further control on motor vehicles, improvement to traffic management and transport service.

The number of motor vehicle in Beijing totals 4.7 million so far, and still grows at an average rate of 2,000 per day, and the maximum of 4,000 per day. Beijing has an urgent need to take immediate actions to solve pressing traffic problems.
