Peru's Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was ranked fifth on the list of Top Ten best adventure attractions in the world, the state-run travel company Promperu said Friday.

The selection was made by a jury consisting leading writers, explorers and journalists from Britain, such as Tony Wheeler, founder of Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide book in the world.

The Inca Trail, built during the Inca Empire, is part of a network of more than 30,000 km of roads, and was used by the Inca as their way to the sacred city of Machu Picchu.

The Inca Trail is annually visited by thousands of world travelers attracted by its spectacular view of mountains, wild vegetation, the opportunity to enjoy different microclimates, the chance to hike the ancient Inca road and archaeological ruins.

The best three Top Ten adventure attractions are tiger tracking on elephants in India's Kanha National Park, skiing down on an active volcano on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, and diving with hammer head sharks in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.
