The government of Tanzania has assured the public that the country is safe from swine flu that has so far claimed the lives of more than 150 people in Mexico.

A statement released by the Tanzanian Health Ministry said the government had taken precautious measures against the spread of the fatal disease into the country.

Health Ministry spokesperson Nsachris Mwamwaja explained that police and airport authorities had tightened screening at all entry points for symptoms of the swine flu which first appeared in the central American country a month ago.

The World Health Organization has issued an alert warning earlier this week that the swine flu was showing a sustained ability to pass from human to human and is therefore able to cause community-level outbreaks.

Although no people have died of the disease outside Mexico, dozens of cases of human infection have been confirmed in the United States, Canada, Spain and Britain.
