Paramount's psychological movie "Shutter Island" earned 40.2 million dollars in United States alone in the past weekend, according to news reports on Monday.

The movie has earned the amount in its first three days. According to Time.com, it is the biggest debut weekend for any DiCaprio movie even overshadowing Titanic.

The psychological thriller is adapted from Dennis Lehane's novel of the same name, which was on New York Times Best Seller list, with Martin Scorsese as director and Leonardo DiCaprio as actor.

"We have rarely felt more pressure about an opening," said Rob Moore, Paramount's vice chairman, "everyone was standing over us to see if the decision was a good one. Luckily, the result was phenomenal," reported the New York Times.

According to the Los Angeles Times, though a big success in its opening weekend, "Shutter Island" was not inexpensive to produce, "the movie cost nearly 100 million dollars to make."
