The 2011 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo came to a close on a record-breaking run, with more than 2.26 million people attended, president of the RodeoHouston said Monday.

The impact of the RodeoHouston was recognized this year by the New York Stock Exchange, which allowed the closing bell on Friday to be rung in a televised ceremony with a cowboy, Neil Holmes, riding a leaping bull with the bell ringing out.

This year, the RodeoHouston has distributed more than 277 million dollars in scholarship money to Texas students in public schools and universities in eight southeast Texas countryside areas surrounding Houston.

United Airlines sponsored The High Flyin' Award, with a year of free airline travel to the contestants boosted highest into the air by his livestock ride, as well as to those who endured the hardest spills, roughest crashes and toughest luck.

To accomplish the rodeo's goals and to reach the diverse audiences attracted to the event, the rodeo has many events tailored for every age group, including sheep rides and demonstrations of activities on ranches and farms.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the world's largest live entertainment and livestock exhibition. It is also considered as the biggest event of the year in Houston.
