To foster a closer relationship with members of the global geoparks network, the Hong Kong National Geopark signed a sister arrangement with the Germany-based Global Geopark Bergstrasse-Odenwald on Friday.

It is the fifth sister arrangement signed by the Hong Kong National Geopark after those inked with global geoparks in Australia, Chinese mainland, Japan and Britain.

Establishing a partnership between the two geoparks will help strengthen the existing relationship and collaboration in areas such as tourism promotion, research, education and training, said a senior official of the Hong Kong National Geopark.

The director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation of the city government Alan Wong, and CEO of Global Geopark Bergstrasse- Odenwald Reinhard Diehl officiated the signing ceremony.

The Hong Kong National Geopark includes two regions covering eight geo-areas, each with unique geological features. The Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region displays spectacular hexagonal rock columns, which are considered world class in terms of size and coverage.

The Global Geopark Bergstrasse-Odenwald, situated in the southwest of Germany, is bound to the north by the Messel Pit, a well-known historical heritage on the World Heritage List.
