Off to Italy to check in on some mysterious artwork.. According to an Italian researcher, the key to solving the enigmas of Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting the Mona Lisa lies in her eyes. This is just the latest theory about a painting that has never ceased to intrigue scholars, art lovers and casual viewers alike.

Stefania Romano is a member of the National Committee for the Valorisation of Cultural Heritage. She said she and a group of historians had found the letter "S" in the woman's left eye, which might refer to a woman in the Sforza dynasty that ruled Milan, the letter "L" in her right eye, which might refer for Leonardo, and the number "72" under the arched bridge in the backdrop of the painting.

Stefania Romano said, "In regard to the number 72 present under the arch of the bridge depicted by Leonardo on the right side of the Mona Lisa's painting, it is possible to notice it with the naked eye or with a simple magnifying glass. We believe it's the number 72."

But some Leonardo scholars have expressed doubt over the new findings, or their significance, with one calling them "unsubstantial". Tradition holds that the Mona Lisa is a painting of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo, and that Leonardo started painting it in 1503.

Claudio Strinati, said, "It's my belief that they exaggerated a bit because even admitting that there are really letters and a number hidden, it seems to me that the Gioconda mystery isn't emerging for these issues as a matter of fact. In this analysis there is something exaggerated."

Claudio Strinati, an art historian and an official with the Italian Culture Ministry, said Leonardo's passion for the Kabbalah is well known. But he doesn't believe that Leonardo wanted to attach any symbolic meaning to the letters and numbers, otherwise he would have left better clues.
