Chinese characters.

Recently, interim result of a survey on Chinese cultural symbols was released and a total of 270 items were selected as Chinese cultural symbols. The top 10 representative items were Chinese characters, Confucius, Chinese calligraphy, the Great Wall, China's national flag, traditional Chinese medicine, Chairman Mao Zedong, the Imperial Palace, Deng Xiaoping and the Terracotta Warriors, reported by Jinan Daily.

The survey, led by Beijing Normal University professors Wang Yichuan and Dong Xiaoping, took nearly half a year, and the interim result was obtained through a large-scale investigation among China's college students.

According to the survey, modern items were less popular than traditional items as cultural symbols. Neither famous modern celebrities, including Liu Xiaoqing, Han Han, Cui Jian, Li Zehou, Song Zuying, Jay Chou and Teresa Teng, nor modern scientists and scientific achievements, such as Yuan Longping, Chen Jingrun, Lenovo and Baidu, achieved very high ranks on the cultural symbol's list. Classical literary figures also ranked lower.

The survey reveals that intangible cultural symbols and traditional cultural symbols are much more popular than modern and literary cultural symbols in most college students' view. Wang Yichuan said this is problematic, and it is quite necessary to figure out how to improve the influence of modern Chinese art and culture.
