Wang is the most common Chinese surname in Beijing and in all of China, according to news from the National Citizen Identity Information Center, on September 14.

Wang, Zhang, Li, Liu, and Zhao are the top five surnames shared by people in Beijing.

Permanent residents of Han ethnicity in Beijing total 11.28 million, sharing 2,041 surnames. In Beijing, the surnames Wang and Zhang are shared by over 1 million people respectively, accounting for 19.8 percent of the population.

The distribution of surnames in Beijing is identical with that of most northern Chinese provinces. The surnames Sun, Gao, and Ma are all listed in the top ten in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province.
