Huang Rixin, the 78-year-old designer and builder of the "capsule apartment," announced on Dec. 28 that he plans to transfer his capsule apartments for free to someone who would like to run them. He said he spent 100,000 RMB on the project and it's the time to stop it.

Nine months have passed since the first report about the capsule apartment was released on March 28 of this year. During this period of time, Huang spared no efforts to develop his special solution for the housing crisis affecting the urban floating population.

After the first simple batches of capsule apartments, he also designed and built the second and third generations and invested about 100,000 RMB, which is equal to two years' pension for him and his wife.

"I will be 79 years old on Thursday and I am already running out of energy to do anything about the capsule apartment," Huang said.

The lease term of Huang's third generation capsule apartments is going to be end on Jan. 25 of next year, and Huang is not capable of running them any longer, so he plans to transfer them to someone else for free. He said some developers and scholars contacted him to talk about cooperation, but they did not invest money in the project because there were no supportive policies from the government.

"I will keep looking for people who would like to run the project," Huang said after he failed to donate the apartments to a relevant government office.

On the transferring sketch Huang made, he wrote down that he would like to volunteer to donate his capsule apartments for free and hopes his apartments could be helpful for exploring resolutions to the urban floating population's problems.
