Beijingers woke up to see the first snowfall of the new year Saturday, after nearly two months of drought.

The snow began before daybreak in Beijing and parts of the neighboring Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province, the weather bureau said. <Detail>

China's Central Meteorological Station (CMS) on Sunday morning extended the warning against strong cold wave, snowstorm and heavy fog by issuing another orange alert.

Affected by the strong cold snap, temperature was to fall by 8 to 12 degrees Celsius in central and western Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, eastern parts of northwest China, north China, Guizhou and Chongqing from Sunday to Monday, according to the CMS. <Detail>

Northern China has started the new year with heavy snowfall. In Beijing, Tianjin, and areas of Hebei province, the snow has piled up on roads and has caused headaches for many drivers.

Experts are warning that Beijing may see its coldest winter in nearly 40 years. More than half of the planes at the city's airports have been delayed. <Detail>

Heavy snow hit Beijing on Sunday to close expressways, delay flights and disrupt bus services.

As of 10 a.m., 120 outbound flights, including both domestic and international ones, had been delayed at the Beijing Capital International Airport and 86 flights were canceled. Only one of the three runways at the airport remained open, according to the airport management. <More>

China's Central Meteorological Station extended its cold front advisory on Sunday, predicting more snow and heavy fog.

Northern parts of the country, including Beijing and Tianjin municipalities, as well as Hebei Province, have been hit especially hard. Primary and middle schools in all three areas have been closed. <More>

Fewer cars were seen on Sunday on the streets in the urban areas of Beijing and Tianjin, as well as cities in Hebei Province and Inner Mongolia. Highways were temporarily shut down, and long distance buses were canceled. <More>
