A Brazilian woman was indicted Thursday for murdering her own newly born daughter by throwing her in a river in Contagem, in the Minas Gerais state.
Three people found the baby alive on the riverbank on Sept. 30 and took her to a hospital, where she died on Oct. 5 due to an infection and a cerebral edema.
The mother, Elisabete Cordeiro, was denounced and caught by police. In her testimony, she confessed to having tried to abort the child twice with the aid of a neighbor who has also been charged with murder.
Cordeiro underwent psychological tests and was found with no mental illness.
According to Brazil's laws, if found guilty of murdering, she can be sentenced to 12 to 30 years in prison.
